The power of three, The South Pasadena Educational Foundation (SPEF), the SPHS Booster Club, and the South Pasadena Unified School District (SPUSD) worked together to have the old, wooden SPHS stadium bleachers replaced with new aluminum seating over the summer. With $15,000 from Parti Gras’s Paddle Raise and $11,000 each from SPEF’s Major Grant fund, the SPHS Boosters, and SPUSD, we were able to fully replace these seats before the start of the 2016-2017 school year. Thank you to everyone that has donated to SPEF and Boosters; without you, this would not have happened.
For those keeping score, the scoreboards in the gymnasium were so old that no one is really sure how old they were. “Maybe sometime in the ’70s?” guesses Athletic Director Greg Luna.
What Luna did know is that the scoreboards were so old that it was no longer possible to find spare parts or keep them in repair.
Enter the SPHS Booster Club.
With its contribution of $8,800 added to funding provided by the school district, the Booster Club made it possible to replace both with state-of-the-art new scoreboards in January.
“We thought this was a great investment, given that the scoreboards will benefit not just all of our basketball teams, but volleyball, wrestling and badminton as well,” says Booster President Kate Gibson. “Call it a win-win-win-win.”
